Painful Bunion?

May 31, 2018

What is a bunion? A bunion is a bony bump that forms where your big toe meets the ball of your foot. When your toes get crowded and the tip of the big toe gets pushed toward the rest of your toes, the base of the toe starts to grow outward and becomes deformed. Besides being unsightly, which is the main complaint about bunions, they can also be painful. If left untreated, bunions can also cause other foot conditions.

Bunion Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Early treatment  can simply include changing shoes, non steroid anti-inflammatory medications, orthotics and physical therapy. Surgical treatment is reserved for cases that does not respond conservative care.

Bunion surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia with oral sedatives or general anaesthesia. Most patients will be mobile following bunion correction in a post-operative shoe. In most cases patients progress to normal footwear within 6 weeks after the operation.
